Not really the proper reaction upon finding a backpack trailing a wire…

For anyone who may be too young to remember, or otherwise not know, Richard Jewell was a security guard who was on-duty at Centennial Olympic Park on the night of July 27, 1996. He was the one who found the backpack full of pipe bombs, and alerted the authorities. There were two casualties from the explosions, but if not for Jewell, the count very likely would have been quite a bit higher. He was rightly hailed as a hero in the media in the immediate aftermath of the bombing, but during the subsequent investigation, the FBI named him as a ‘person of interest’. Overnight, the media’s focus on Jewell turned on a dime, and he was relentlessly persecuted and harassed for months, until finally being exonerated in October. His story is a cautionary tale about the amount of damage both the government and the newsmedia can do to a person when they jump to erroneous conclusions. The ACTUAL bomber turned out to be a radical pro-life activist who was trying to draw the public’s focus to his cause, and because everyone was so focused on trying to prove Jewell’s guilt, the bomber was able to get away and carry out three additional bombings, until he was finally captured in 2003.

I knew this plan would bomb… so to speak.

Unless he actually DOES set it off and still get in trouble for it.
