@GumbyIsInnocent: This is referencing the scientific discovery from August of 1996 that there are lakes of ice on Mars, and that the presence of water means there could be some form of life on the planet, even if on a microbial level. It was a huge deal at the time, especially considering ’90s culture was already obsessed with aliens 😁
Everyone is like “Space Jam didn’t come out until November; Mars Attacks! didn’t come out until later.”
Well, there ARE trailers. That could stir up the imagination.
But then there are ALSO those Nike commercials featuring Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes. That could be an inspiration as well.

I did once hear about this concept for a live-action Marvin the Martian movie, though I don’t know if it was conjured up in the 90s or later in the late 2000s.
@The One Fan Of Cutthroat Island: You can say that again!
It was quite a pleasant surprise seeing Marvin the Martian and K-9 guest star in this comic. Marvin the Martian’s one of my personal favourite “Looney Tunes” characters of all time (with one of my other favourites being Dan Backslide from “The Dover Boys”) to the point where I sometimes do impressions of him.
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh, man, look at those cavemen go
It’s the freakiest show
“Where’s the kaboom? There’s supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!”

“Capture that creature and retrieve the Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator!”

C’mon, Eugene, he obviously listened to our radio broadcasts… that’s how the space aliens always do it.
Just please don’t get him very angry! (pant pant pant) VERY angry indeed!
So, wait. What exactly is this referencing?
“Space Jam” didn’t come out until November of 1996, and “Mars Attacks!” was December.

This gave me Space Jam vibes.
Priceless.
I think this could be a reference to Mars’ Attack with Jack Nicholson but I am not sure.
And “Merrily We Roll Along” plays…
Love it.
