Is my memory flawed, or was being “cool” back then more important than it is to kids nowadays? Or do they just have different ways to chase cool other than having the right shirt and making a witty comment so the kids laughed..
In my experience trying to look and act cool just gets your ridiculed more because folks can kinda tell when it’s natural or artificial, kinda like an uncanny valley effect. Even if you fool them, it a pretty thin ice act, one bad move and it’ll break the illusion. Honestly just having a good personality and owning it can be more attractive to people since it at least helps people judge you better.
Again, that saying I made for myself to follow:
“You don’t have to LOOK cool, SOUND cool, or ACT cool to BE cool.”
The definition of “cool” varies. Most people associate “cool” with rad, extreme, hardcore stuff. Others just find generally likeable or pleasurable stuff to be “cool”, as in not something to hate.
Wonder what those “cool kids” would be doing in this day and age?
Yeah, Vince is cool, but that’s all he’s got. There’s really nothing else to him. Eric and Kendra are at least flawed enough to have actual character depth.

Kendra definitely has that San Francisco hippie look to her. Eric should find his own way of being cool.
Vince doesn’t make sense anyway. Whatever example he is involves cryptography.
None of which solves Eric’s problems.
Man, poor Eric. Kid wants to fit in badly, but is considered an outcast among his peers.
