@TheJayster49: Once gangsta rap (like NWA and Ice T) and more political stuff (Like Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions) took hold, the more soccer mom-friendly party rap (like Hammer, Will Smith, Kid & Play) were looked down on. Hammer and Smith’s attempts to jump on the gangsta bandwagon didn’t help.
And then you have you have contemporary rap fans who try to say Hammer, et. al. were NEVER cool with rap fans.
There’s a series on YouTube called “Trainwreckords” that dives into disastrous albums. I think the episode on Hammer’s “The Funky Headhunter” nicely wraps up his meteoric rise and hard fall when he tried to go hardcore.
In hindsight, if he had listened to a financial advisor and just stuck to his strengths, be would’ve been fine.
Gotta say, this was an entertaining strip. I like how Joel and Katy are friendlier with each other in this new continuity. Admittedly, MC Hammer is a guilty pleasure artist I listen to from time to time.
I never really understood the flak MC Hammer got. I thought his music was the bomb.
I also like the Joel is being much nicer and only teasing Katy about her interest in Hammer rather than just being straight-up pessimistic about it. That’s a huge improvement over the original strips and their relationship in general.
Nice to see that Joel is well-versed in a variety of music genres, even ones that he doesn’t generally favour. That’s a musician…

Is it wrong to make a Hammerman joke?

They’re both in their own little worlds, but Joel’s trying to improve Katie’s. It’s OK to like things, it’s not OK to like having an empty brain.
