Too bad only a small fraction of recycle-bound plastic actually gets recycled. At least a bigger proportion of paper, glass, and metal gets recycled. (Especially aluminum, that stuff is almost 100% recyclable.)
My town does pay-as-you-throw, where they’ll only pick up trash in specially marked bags the town sells, but they’ll take all the recyclables you’ve got for free. (Well, no additional charge on top of the annual solid waste fee.) That seems fair, the more you throw away the more it costs you. It’s actually kind of cathartic to see how much trash you can cram into the small, cheap bags. If it weren’t for Styrofoam and plastic film, I’d probably have hardly any trash at all.
While recycling programs do help, the fact is most of them were created/pushed for by polluters who wanted to shift the responsibility of cleaning up off of themselves and onto the public.
I remember when my city introduced it. Big news blitz to tell everyone, free blue buckets, recycling trucks on a weekly schedule. Eventually it flopped because people either weren’t bothering or were putting out non-recyclable stuff; no one wanted to sort and rinse their cans and bottles. Don’t know how much money the city blew. The only states that manage are the states with bottle deposits; always liked those.
Here’s another redone strip that’s worlds better than its original incarnation — in this case, the original had Rick being his usual charming self, growling at Denise to get off his damn lawn and deliberately crushing a beer can just to make her upset.
Yeah, recycling programs are necessary in today’s world. One of my neighbors has so much trash, they need two recycling bins since pickups only happen in my town’s recycling program every other week: one week for yard waste and the other for recycle.
The institution of the recycling program did cause a lot of confusion. And who better to represent that than Denise! She can confuse anyone by saying hello- her way.
While I am admittedly pretty wasteful, I do dislike the fact that my apartments don’t seem to have a recycling program. I got twice as much trash now as a result.
Although it DOES kinda beat having lots of plastic and cans piling up in my room because I’m too lazy to go out and putting them directly into the recycling lol
Recycling is good
