Of course, there are plenty of other, similar idioms that don’t make much sense either. “Smart as a whip”, “easy as pie”, “cool as a cucumber”, “cute as a button”…the list goes on!
@MegaJar – I don’t remember where I read and/or heard it, but I have heard that rocks have a scientifically proven IQ of 3… making them significantly smarter than most inanimate objects.
What I saw or read was probably satire, but that could answer your question regarding the sayings around being dumb as a rock… or “dumb as a box of rocks” as I more often see (and hear).
D’aww, that was sweet. Craig may be dumb as a rock, but he can be surprisingly eloquent and insightful.
P.S. Why do people say “dumb as a rock”, anyway? I mean, why a rock, specifically? Are rocks somehow inherently dumber than any other inanimate object?
Craig reassures Lindsey by telling her her fears are wrong. Lindsey disappoints (instead of demolishes) Wesley by telling him his sex goals are wrong. Jessica can come up with something, stick to it, and be right. It was Jessica’s method that got Lindsay out of the locked room with Wesley that had no resolution other than Lindsay yelling at him. Despite choosing such a famous movie like Silence of the Lambs, there’s very little addressing the core plot and famous scenes of it. (Yes, I know, book, but the movie is what was seen by the wider audience.) At least Aaron wasn’t the villain this time.
Relax Craig, I don’t think very many people know either.
In all seriousness, I really like Craig’s character in this incarnation. He’s still fairly dumb, but it’s more tolerable since he’s actually introduced as a nice (if a bit introverted) guy and has more pronounced moments of intelligence compared to the original.
Also Lindsay, everybody has a breaking point. And considering the constant sexual harassment I faced in high school, I sincerely wish I had your courage.
If it ends in “-ly” and is acting as an adjective for _another_ adjective, then it’s an adverb.
I think.
This hits even deeper now that we know more about Lindsay’s backstory.
@Pichu-82: Hmm, interesting! Thanks for the info!

Okay, that was heartwarming. But we also got some more hints as to what Lindsay dealt with back in California.
