@Nic Kramer: Yes. And that was the LAST year Arrested Development the band was in the public zeitgeist. That was the year they released their second album, Zingalamamamundi. Not only did that flop both financially and critically, but it exposed the weaknesses in Three Years, Five Months And Two Days In The Life Of… that people had overlooked back in ’92, thus leading to their becoming all-but-forgotten by the turn of the millennium.
@Chris Well, they must’ve made it to ’94 because during that year as I said, they appeared on “The Happiest Street in the World” (yes, I know I’m quoting the worng song and music style, just level with me).
@Mole204: He most definitively is NOT, and if you knew anything about the band this arc is spoofing, you wouldn’t say such blatant falsehoods. Even without the context of Arrested Development’s rise and sudden downfall, this arc has shown, repeatedly, why Darren is at best a pretentious moron and at worst an emotionally abusive egotist.
But he doesn’t use AAVE so that makes him “Better” than Vince. You sicken me, Mole. Get some help.
@ Christopher. You’re right, it’s just that he’s such an improvement when compared to Vince. Vince, up until now was occasionally the only black guy in town. Yes, they’re both screw ups, but at least Darren tries to improve himself. Vince can’t even speak English. He can’t even speak Mario Brothers English.
@Mole204: At the time there were a lot of guys like Darren in the media’s eye. Entire movements in both music and sociopolitical discussions. It just turned out that the exact guy Darren is based on was a control freak, a raging egotist, and very likely emotionally abusive, and will in the future give his unsolicited opinions on issues he absolutely should not be talking about. So we had guys like him, but we didn’t need more guys EXACTLY like him.
Poor Darren, the 90’s world and it’s media needs/needed more black people like him in it. Perhaps when Nalah pounds him into little pieces, there will be more of him. I really had guessed Vince, Aaron, or Kendra for throwing the first punch.
So he wants to liberate his black brothers and sisters from urban violence by rapping about urban violence and make a profit from it. I feel like I’ve heard this scenario play out before but it slips my mind on where exactly.
Was right about needing the ambulance…just not the cause. Here’s hoping Dr. Van Helsing from “Cannonball Run” is in the backwhen they haul is ass away.
@plocb: He also made a character satirizing Speech’s hollow pontificating like Darren is here.
Years from now, Aaron McGruder will make a similar point to Darren. Wonder if anything’s changed.
@Ellen Natalie: He probably already saw where this was going and figured “Hey sometimes they gotta learn the hard way.”

Meanwhile, Grandpa is just watching.

Well, not Kendra, but a woman did whup his ass.

And THERE’S our Dionne Farris moment. At this point it’ll be a miracle if the rest of this group even makes it to ’94.
And yes for anyone wondering, something like this did happen for reals.

Anybody notice how the stupidest people on earth are the ones that think they’re the smartest?

Yyyyyyyyyep. He had that coming.
Good on Nalah and Jabali giving Darren his just desserts.
That idiot who thinks he’s so smart, just got what he deserved.
