Pfft, if Deb will get uppity over some Batman toys, she’d go ballistic on this kinda subject and think they were “poisoning the youth with their sexual confusion” or some crap, so the fugus line is apt. Normally I don’t care much for homosexuality stories (I’m honestly indifferent to same sex romances, it’s no different then a boy-girl one to me. Especially if they get too cutsey on the matter. Rabid shippers haven’t exactly helped on that front either). But considering this era and the mindset at the time, yeah this should be interesting. Good on Katey for admitting this is new territory for her too, but still being a good friend and supporter.
Of course, this is still the early Nineties, when bisexuality (and homosexuality, for that matter) didn’t have nearly the same level of widespread understanding and acceptance that it does today. Thank God we live in an era where our kids don’t need to be ashamed of —

So it’s a girl from school, but it’s not Katey? I don’t even know why that’s disappointing, but it probably has something to do with all the wrong characters going insane. Ashley and Katey are more married than some of the spouses in this comic. I haven’t watched enough 70’s sitcoms to want Katey going full Carol Burnett or Lucile Ball, but I would want to see how long she’d last until being a pink-bathrobed housewife breaks her.
Jayster raises some good points- that JB’s output isn’t as much as it deserves to be!
I agree with Jayster, Ashleigh’s primary role throughout the comics is just being Katy’s best friend and nothing else. Then again, plenty of secondary characters are just the friends to more significant characters.. So this should be a step in the right direction to expand the comic’s universe.
Living Fungus, that’s a pretty good insult towards Deb right there. I am certain we will be getting interactions between Ashleigh and Jocelyn later on in this arc. It’s also nice that Katy is being supportive of her friend the best she can.
Now that Alex has mentioned it in the previous strip, I do remember the Forever 16 era having some comics depicting Ashleigh experimenting with bisexuality. I mainly remember that one comic where Ashleigh pretended to be another person and then kissed that one girl who’s now the protagonist of your Adorkable series (is that still ongoing? I don’t really see you draw anything related to it anymore).
Consider how the previous NNS iteration had no explicit mention of it, it’s certainly interesting seeing the reboot revisit the idea of Ashleigh being bisexual. I know I’ve brought it up a dozen times already, but I’m sincerely hoping it’ll finally give Ashleigh some much needed character depth, especially since she’s a total satellite character if I’m being brutally honest.

Welp, at least they’re asking important questions and addressing the obvious.
I pray Deb doesn’t show up…
I think this is actually a good time for Joel and friends to step in.
Sad for her.
🙁

…Oh. Right. Never mind.
Paging Ms. Stafford…

“My mom’s divorced, what does she know about relationships?” Flawless Logic.
