I think the key thing is this: those guys didn’t ACTUALLY appreciate grunge music, they were just into it because it was officially deemed “cool” now, and they wanted to jump on the bandwagon. And the second that grunge is no longer considered cool, they’ll ditch it and never look back. In other words, they’re posers. What Joel wants is people who are into his kind of music for real, not just because everyone else is doing it.
What DOES Joel want? I mean, he’s always complaining about how nobody appreciates the kinds of music he loves, but the second people start to do so, he can’t stand it. Granted, his classmates were being rather stalkerish towards him, but I still stand by my point.
I really do feel like Mole204 – of all people – put it best. When you achieve popularity, it’s easy to complain about it because you’re not used to having it. But then you complain about NOT having popularity because you want your work to be seen and appreciated, ultimately turning into a lose-lose battle.

I think this is the part of the story where we get the “bee-woop!” iris-in ending. lol
Eh, you’re in high school, Joel. You got time to figure that out. You’ll be fine.

Well, you win some, you lose some Joel.
