Yeah that mess can be scarring at such a young age. You think you’d have gotten over it right then and there but it stays with your soul and can creep up on ya. But it can be overcome if you don’t let it consume you, just part of the package in experiences of life.
I know this sounds stupid, but reading/seeing supportive Michelle moments like these help get ME out of bad funks ’cause there’s lots of moments I feel the same lack of self esteem/confidence as Joel.
That was it? You’d think the same sort of ridicule repeated for the next 8 grades would have had something to do with it.
Sorry, I couldn’t hear you over: I was watching about 10 minutes of “Al Music special” (Weird Al Yankovic mocking music videos) while making lunch. Many ideas are all about getting it to print first. Still, “How was yesterday?” Joel:”Oh I laid in bed and recounted years-old moments of ridicule and crushing embarrassment to my girlfriend.” “Normal St Valentines Day, then?”
Either Joel just can’t seem to catch a break, or Eden Prairie isn’t at all a pleasant place to live in considering there doesn’t seem to be anybody outside our main/supporting protagonists that you can actually trust.
Either way, I like that this arc delved into Joel’s backstory. It helps give him more depth and makes his descent into cynicism feel more believable since it shows he had to deal with this kind of crap since as far back as elementary school.

@Zach Kenny: I’m honored to be able to help 😊

Glad to see Michelle giving Joel reassurance.
