I am also surprised that Ronald doesn’t have a Helga T Pataki-esque shrine dedicated to Billy Graham hidden deep in the closet that Phyllis doesn’t know about if Ronald is that much of a nutcase. Or Kenneth Copeland.
On one hand, Phyllis you ever considered just letting your kid be a kid and not be dictated by overly conservative Christians? There’s god-fearing for your soul but at least living a good life with various experiences and then there’s “Raar, I hate everything because some loon on the TV said it was bad” without knowing the context and it’s not to be taken as anything other then entertainment. Heck my mom’s a major church goer and I wasn’t much of a religious person growing up (still love my church though, have some good friends there). But likewise she didn’t force it on me either, I still had my video games, I could still watch cartoons and action shows (she put her foot down on a few of them like Beavis and Butt-Head but otherwise was indifferent at best by my shows. It helped she explained not to imitate what I saw). People are built different after all and personalities will not be one for one of a generation, you can’t force them to be a certain way. Sure Ronald’s happy now but you rather have a daughter who’s overly resentful going into her adulthood too?
On the other, Joyce I know you like your sarcasm, but time and place sister. Let’s not exacerbate the situation. Should probably know by now your mom’s not exactly in a good headspace. Though good question, the heck did Phyliss’ parents do to her?
@Lisa: I think he was just joking and pointing out how blind Phyliss is being to her own daughter’s life.
And the delusion at the heart of Christianity shows itself. It’s not the psycho self-righteous twerps like Ronald; they’re terrible no matter where you run into them. It’s otherwise decent people like Phyllis brainwashed to think hate is love and some imaginary heaven is more important than the real world. I moved away from Christianity because of the Ronalds, but I left because of the Phyllisses.
@Lourenzo that is… a serious misunderstanding of how both god’s wrath and bisexuality work lmao. She’s still bisexual even if she’s dating a dude right now, because she’s still also into women.
OK, we all know Ronald is regarded by everyone (us readers and the characters) as a crazy villain, but after watching what she said in the last panel, I think Phyllis is way more crazy than Ronald himself!
I feel like Phyllis genuinely wants to be a good mother, but she’s too blinded by her religious upbringings to do it right. Again, this makes me hope she goes through a redemption arc, cause I appreciate that she actually has some level of depth and genuine sympathy unlike many of the other villains in this comic.
Man, now I also definitely wanna see a backstory arc featuring Phyllis and Vicky. Seriously, what the hell does she see in that old fart she calls a husband?

@Kim I mean XP

@JIMENOPOLIXShe means Christian salvation.
Jocelyn DOESN’T want saving?
So she doesn’t want to go inside the warm house to escape the cold? 😆
Also, what happened to staying with Aunt Vicky? Or does she live too far away to go now?

How will you save her, Phyllis? Simple. Accept her for who she is.
I called it, I so called it that these two had a crappy childhood that drove this wedge between them.
Also, I’m appreciating this symbolic framing, where Phyllis is almost seeming like the one trapped here.

isn’t Jocelyn dating a dude? so isn’t her soul already saved?

Yeah, I’m pretty sure Phyllis and Vicky’s upbringing messed Phyllis up pretty bad.
