I remember turning on MTV once, back when they actually showed music videos. My mom asked what was on, and I described the video for “Let’s Dance” as ‘a neat song by some new guy named ‘David Bowie’.
In my defense, I was 12 when the album dropped.
Hey give her time. at that age I was mostly hooked on rap, hip hop and R&B. Took me awhile to get into rock, now I’m a major fan of bands like Queen. And yeah sampling can be a gateway to other bands and singers too, learning that from MC Hammer and Rick James. Gotta walk before you can run as they say.
@Guilherme Gabarrao: This is 1991, my man. Queen was seen at this time as has-beens, forgotten by rock and pop charts that had moved on, seen as a cautionary tale and, as discussed here, a tragedy of the AIDS epidemic. It won’t be until 1992 that the mainstream remembers who Queen are, with Wayne’s World restoring “Bohemian Rhapsody” to its rightful place in pop history.
It’s literally impossible to never had heard Queen, Katy! You problably didn’t know it was Queen, but I’m sure you heard a lot of their musics, even if it was in a TV ad, a film, or one of your beloved sitcoms…
@ Jayster: Yeah, even as someone who’s not really a Queen fan don’t hate them, but I feel a lot of their songs have been played out too much) it was too cliche. Even before the movie came out, I was on team Rocketman.
@Red Rain – Like I said, Katy will NOT care unless the genre in particular is pop (and maybe rap since I recall a few strips showing she has an interest in that kind of music).
Huge fan of Queen. Still an Iconic band even to this day. Can’t believe it took Joel mentioning Vanilla Ice of all people for Katy to even get an idea to who Freddie Mercury even was.
I still can’t believe Joel even bothers trying to discuss music with Katy. He REALLY should know by now that, unless it’s anything related to pop, Katy will have no friggin’ clue what you’re talking about.
I’m just gonna say it.
Bohemian Rhapsody is the single most overrated piece of music to ever be recorded! In fact, Queen themselves are even more overrated!

@Zach Kenny – I honestly don’t intend on seeing the movie, but based on what I’ve heard, Joel and the gang would NOT like it to put it mildly.
So what do you suppose they’d think of the Bohemian Rhapsody movie? (I know that’s way beyond this comic’s timeline, but let’s put aside that fact)

For the record, fat-bottomed girls do, in fact, make the rockin’ world go ’round
Forever in one ear, out the other. Katy actually needs to listen to more music. It’s getting her brain to notice what’s going on that’s the hard part.
