@Mole204: No shit it’d be from authorial intent. That’s how fiction works.
And I’ve got news for you: The people Deb is based on? They are also bad people. The fact that you seem to think she should get a free pass just because she’s fictional baffles me. The fact that she is explicitly out to hurt Tina, and implicitly anyone who doesn’t meet her standards for morality should be enough to tell you she’s a bad person.
If Deb manages to brainwash anyone into doing anything, it would only be because of Authorial Intent. Deb is a character type from a “that was the style at the time” bunch of brainless ninnies who took umbrage at how television was doing something that they didn’t like. Usually by portraying the family unit as how it really was, or by having more sexyness then it should be, and parents coming down hard on their kids/teens and making believe that they were in the right. Deb isn’t responsible for what’s going on any more than Aaron is responsible for burning down Woodstock 99. She’s just in her setting. Deb isn’t a bad person, for a fictional character. She’s not out to hurt anyone, and her attempts at Orwellian Mind Control are really so that she can do the “I am the best. I’m better than Tina. I’m better than everyone. Yay me.” dance. And really, those “inalienable rights” go missing every time a school staff member opens a Mark Twain book to something anti-authoritarian. Deb isn’t doing anything new.
@Mole204: You realize the woman you are championing is not only incredibly authoritarian to her own son, but is trying to brainwash all the other parents in town into thinking like she does? That Deb’s fearmongering has already gotten to Michelle’s mom? That Deb is actively campaigning to have the inalienable rights guaranteed to the children of this town under the Constitution revoked “for their own good”?
Oh, why am I trying to argue with a man who doesn’t think I, a bisexual person, am valid?
@Mole204 Mmmmm no I think it’s clear she wants to hurt people, or at least throw them under the bus to make herself look good in comparison. It’s not just that she wants people to stop being scum, it’s that she goes so far as to think any semblance of anything that isn’t squeaky clean NO MATTER HOW MINOR in all perspective ought to be banned and anyone who doesn’t wholly agree with her should also be shamed. So yeah…..she deserves to lose because she IS IN FACT also a bad person.
Lemme guess, he ends up near Tina, there’s some minor infraction or misunderstanding, Deb blows it way out of proportion and tries to make Tina look bad as usual. Lets see.
Babies! They’re babies!rargrbl!
What, did you think they’d come out quoting MacBeth?

Characters get to be dumb and have vague goals= is being treated as good.
Deb gets to be dumb and have specific goals= IBTA bad.
Characters get to be rude, offensive, and let’s admit it- perverted. IBTA good.
Deb wants to get people to stop being scum. IBTA bad.
Shouldn’t anarchy recognize when it’s happening? Shouldn’t readers realize when up is down and wrong is right?
Looking deeper than that, we know that Deb deserves to loose not because of her goals, but because she opposes a main character in a boneheaded way, and because JB writes Jacob as a “heartstrings orphan” you’d want to buy a McDonalds lunch with toy for.
Cheering for Jacob is treated as better than cheering for Deb. That should not mean that there are any similarities between anyone’s “Can’t you just be better people?” with Deb’s “I don’t like these two seconds, take the whole thing away.”
I do not agree with the ‘scare-tactic-gullible parents’ panic of the 90s, I just think that Deb isn’t ‘bad’. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone, but she wants control over others with no follow-through plan. That’s not good. She deserves to lose.
Seriously? Disallowing her kid to watch a TV show because of the word poop? She’s mentally deranged! And I actually do mean that, she needs to be put in a psyche ward or something.
You know, one of the telltale signs of an authoritarian regime is that they censor all outside media so the populace remains ignorant and docile. Just sayin’.
Deb’s not a bad person, she’s just got it out for Tina, and tends to treat Jacob like a decorative plant.
Hey, it looks like there’s two shows left. Unless the first line is the header saying “list of” etc.
She crossed off Rugrats. Wow. There’s someone who needs a good sized dose of Aeon Flux.
Judging from the title of this storyline, I’m hoping this means we’ll get to see Jacob interact with Tina and give her a better insight of how deranged Deb really is as a parent.

Don’t bother. He’ll never learn anything.

“Poop”, huh?
So now Jacob’s not allowed to hear or even see “poop”? Not even when he goes into the bathroom?
She might also despise Adam Sandler’s films at that…
So, I guess in Deb’s household, it’s either The 700 Club… Or watching paint dry.
…Bring on the paint, then?

“Sorry, Ms. Hargreaves, but this bill you wrote violates the 1st Amendment…”
Sounds like someone is doing a little bit of projecting, isn’t she?
And know we get to see the most radical part of the nineties. Political Intrigue!!!
OH HELL NO another Deb arc…… NOPE I’m tapping out, I’ll see you lads later! Wake me up when this delusional bitch finally gets her comeuppance lmao
I’ll bet Tina’s mother likes Deb
@Mole204: She’s a bad person, dude. Only reason you don’t think she is is you share her puritanical views.
Deb’s not a bad person, she’s just got it out for Tina, and tends to treat Jacob like a decorative plant.
