I guess happiness isn’t for Zeke. Joel should get all of it he can, while he can. There’s nothing wrong with the outlook that “If I’m a freak for wanting friends, then me and my friends can be freaks together.”
Speaking from personal observation, most content creators channel their own personal issues and experiences into their work.
What I think they do to make it work is that they balance out these issues with more positive aspects of their lives. While everybody is going to be miserable at some point in their lives, it’s unrealistic for them to be miserable their ENTIRE life.
What Joel needs to do is to search for the things that make him happy. People find their target audience by appealing to their personal interests. Joel can do the same with his interests in rock and video games.
Granted, it seems like most of the characters in this comic hold some sort of grudge towards the things Joel likes for some absurd reason, but that doesn’t mean EVERYBODY hates the genre.
