Not that we’ll see it, because this is a show about the 90s. But…

    Gorillaz and Vocaloid.

    “Cartoons can be real bands.”

Just wait ’till 2001, when the Gorillaz really hit it big.

@Mole204: That’s actually a very good point. By definition, a band is a group of people who gets together to play and/or sing music. So yes, there was a real, honest-to-goodness band involved, no doubt about it.

However, the real band and the people being PRESENTED as the “band” are not necessarily one and the same. The “Archies” weren’t a real band, they were cartoon characters; the REAL band were the actual, flesh-and-blood people who actually played and recorded the music for the cartoon. Same with Gorillaz — the band are the voice actors who did the recordings for the cartoon characters, not the characters themselves.

@El-Man: In JB’s earlier Maxwell Silver Hammer strips, Katy was drawn with defined lips. It’s curious why he changed that later on but it doesn’t really affect anything.

@Zach Kenny I bet she did.

OT: I wonder – is JB trying to keep Katy looking younger than the other girls by not giving her fuller lips, or does Tina not allow her to wear makeup yet?

Yeah, the concept of the virtual band didn’t really take off until Gorillaz happened.

This is a good question, though. If a band is assembled to sing a few songs, to release a novelty 45 or some one-off singles, are they are real band? There were people, they were singers, they performed under the band name. They may even be reassembled again if the work gets enough interest. In modern terms, the Gorilaz is treated as a real band for all those reasons, despite being made up out of people from different music bands. The only hitch is that no one tells the fans like Katy and Ashleigh if the band dispersed immediately after the contracted music was recorded. Were “Guys next door” a real band? Was “Sha na nah?” Was David Ghrol and friends a real band? Laurence Welk? The cartoons or tv show was just the gimmick. If there were people who did the music work, then there was a band. Which… means that Katy was right and Joel was wrong.

I wonder if Joel will recant that statement when Gorillaz makes it big.

I have a cartoon band. I hope I could make it real some day (if they’re taken rather seriously via music quality).
