Yep, it’s systemic racism at work. “These people aren’t really people, because we say so, therefore we can do whatever we want to them.” Always a hit at parties, that one.
Still, though, we must concede one point: even though he did invade and conquer an already-inhabited land, and even though his actions would eventually lead to the near-destruction of indigenous culture…if he hadn’t done all that — if Europeans had never “discovered” and colonized America — then you and I and pretty much every non-indigenous person living in America today would not be here. It’s an odd thing, to decry and demonize an event that, despite being truly terrible, was also indirectly responsible for your own existence.
Columbus is also blamed for everything any underlings, successors, and people not even affiliated with Spain did, and the blame list that Denise taps into is not limited to events during his lifetime. Go teach that, Denise. As for indigenous, it’s some sort of information failure comedy. There’s a name but it’s bad, so you can’t use it, but they need another name, but it’s also bad, etc. Panel 3 raises exactly as many questions as it skips over.

Well, Kevin is trying, even if he came off as innocently insensitive.
I do like the effort that Kevin is making. It feels like the further his ray-bans are from his eyes, the better a dude he is.
The only Chris Columbus I respect is the one who directed Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire.
