Darthsand, to me it looks like Joel forced his way in there, and the unnamed pudgy guy moved out of the way out of a desire to probably not feel awkward. Just my take on it, though.
The fat dude was sitting next to Kevin in the first and third panel, I don’t see a reason why he would move over to the third seat for Joel to sit down, but it really depends on how you look at it.
