I think there may be a bit of “Unreliable Narrator” going on here…

@SP: Remember this is Jocye recounting things to her friends from her POV. She’s likely just fudging the events a little.

Okay I feel Joycelyn’s exaggerating that part with Phyllis there. Or maybe not considering the character =P

It begins! The spark of rebellion is lit! Rise up, ye downtrodden punk girl, and overthrow your oppressive masters!

Joce is so unlike her parents I wouldn’t be surprised if Ronald had accused Phyllis of having an affair – but she’s such a doormat I don’t see that happening either. Ain’t genetics funny?

The “female misogynist” is a pretty underrated trope, I think. Though with Phyllis, it’s… EXTREMELY difficult to tell if she genuinely believes that or if she’s just completely delusional about her life choices (especially since this flashback arc shows she’s just as much of a walking panic attack as she is in the present; Ronald must REALLY be fucking her up).

So that’s how Jocelyn got her dyed hair and rebellious streak.
